Applying For Veteran Benefits

As a veteran, you may be eligible for some funeral benefits, but they are not guaranteed. Most of the time, someone must make the request, which may be time-consuming and unpleasant for your family. We are here to help you prepare your requests before they are required.

The burial or cremation expenses of honorably discharged veterans are not always covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Certain monetary, recognition, and programs to support may be available; however, reimbursement for funeral or cremation service expenses is limited and usually only applies to veterans who:

  • Retired from the Armed Forces
  • Were disabled due to a service-related injury
  • Died in a VA hospital or nursing home under VA contract.

Guidelines are offered as a starting point, but only the VA has the authority to determine your specific benefits.

To prove your military service, you’ll need paperwork.

To prove military service, you will often be asked to produce a “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty” paperwork. (Before 1950, it was called as the Report of Separation, and it consisted of the documents WD AGO 53, WD AGO 55, WD AGO 53-55, NAVPERS 553, NAVMC 78PD, and NAVCG 553.) It was renamed the DD 214 after 1950. All of the documents are different versions of a veteran’s discharge papers.

A veteran’s family must make a request for a US flag.

A flag is supplied free of charge to drape a departed veteran’s casket or accompany his or her urn. Each veteran is only allowed to have one flag. A copy of the veteran’s discharge papers, as well as a “Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes” (VA Form 21-2008), must be provided. Flags are available at VA regional offices and the majority of US Post Offices.

We can help assist your family in obtaining your flag.
